Charles Krug

Robert Mondavi acquired the 100-year old Charles Krug Vineyard and commissioned CF Napa to redesign the firm’s identity. Mondavi asked Doyald to draw the restrained caps and bolder letters.

In the sketches Doyald tried different weights, spacing, and x-height variations. The large pencil drawing was used as an underlay to ink tight comprehensives on tracing paper with a felt-tipped pen.
